African Art: United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Abstract

Songye tribal masks and power figures from Congo, Africa. Seized by United States Fish and Wildlife Service while being smuggled into Hartsfield International Airport. Some pieces incorporated materials harvested from endangered species, which were removed. United States Fish and Wildlife Service donated these materials to Valdosta State University Archives in 2011. Another intake of 6 items being smuggled from Cameroon were donated in 2015.

Donald Penny Collection

Donald Penny was a professor of Art from 1966-1991. While an Art professor he designed a large ceramic mural at the South entrance to the Fine Arts building. This collection contains preliminary designs for that mural.

Joyce Ann Joyce Papers in Honor of Edna and Henry Joyce Jr.

Scope and Contents The Joyce Papers consist mainly of correspondence with colleagues and students.  It also includes  a few photographs, articles and copies of all of her books. Although some items date to Joyce's childhood in Valdosta, the bulk of the papers are from the early 1980's to 2001. Marjorie Estelle Carter Collection

Abstract Dr. Carter came to Georgia State Women's College in 1936, as an Assistant Dean of Women, serving as assistant to Miss Annie Powe Hopper. She is listed as having a BS from William and Mary College. In 1937, in addition to serving as Assistant Dean of Women, she begins duties as an Instructor of Biology, according to the 1937 "Pinecone".
